QATAR. Qatar Airways has surpassed more than 20 million Facebook followers, becoming the most followed airline on the social media platform. It is the first and only global airline to achieve this milestone.
Qatar Airways grew its Facebook following by more than four million during the pandemic crisis. It now reaches more than 26 million people across its Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages.
Qatar Airways launched its Facebook account in 2012 and became the most popular airline on the platform in December 2014 when it surpassed eight million followers. Over the years, Qatar Airways has launched several viral campaigns on Facebook including the 100,000 ticket giveaway for health workers, the A350-1000 delivery campaign and the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia campaign.
It also leveraged Facebook to inform customers about its safety and sanitation measures and CSR-initiatives throughout the global health crisis.
Qatar Airways Senior Vice President Marketing and Corporate Communications Salam Al Shawa commented, “We are extremely proud of this achievement as we became the world’s first airline to surpass 20 million fans on Facebook, reaffirming our position as the world’s most popular airline on the most popular social media network.
“The fact that we have grown by four million followers during the pandemic speaks for the credibility and resilience of our airline,” Shawa added. “The importance of social media to Qatar Airways as a way to directly reach our passengers cannot be overstated as we keep aiming to create quality content while actively engaging with our followers in a way they can relate.
“We hit 20 million followers in 2020 on Facebook, and I am confident that we will reach 30 million followers before 2022 on all platforms, as our ever-growing virtual family continues to grow as they look forward to travelling often like before.”
