USA. San Diego International Airport has opened 16 new stores and restaurants as part of a concessions development programme that runs through to early 2014.
These include:
• Terminal 1: 10News, Ciao Gourmet Market (two locations), Craft Brews on 30th Street, Ryan Bros. Coffee, Starbucks, Stellar News Express, Where Traveler
• Terminal 2: Best Buy (two Express locations), CNBC News San Diego, Gaslamp MarketPlace, Jer’s Chocolates, U.S. News & World Report, Duty Free Americas
• Commuter Terminal: San Diego Bay News and Café (with Caffé Calabria)
The progamme will increase the number of restaurants and retail units from 55 to 87 by completion next year.
Part of the airport’s goal was to increase the Sense of Place through recognised local food & beverage and retail. The latest openings include a range of local bars and restaurants. Examples of these include Craft Brews on 30th Street, Jer’s Chocolates, San Diego Bay News, and a local coffee roaster, Caffe’ Calabria.
Additional concessionaires opening over the coming months include Phil’s BBQ, Warwick’s of La Jolla, Jack in the Box, Stone Brewing Company and Brighton Collectibles, as well as two spas and several wine bars.

“We’re pleased to enhance the traveller’s experience at San Diego International Airport by providing a wide range of new dining and shopping options,” said airport President & CEO Thella F. Bowens.
“Customer satisfaction is a high priority, and these new restaurants and shops will make the traveller’s time at the airport more pleasant and enjoyable.”
A new concession core known as Sunset Cove is part of the Terminal 2 expansion with a number of restaurants with floor to ceiling windows, airfield views, seating and public art.
Craft Brews on 30th Street is recognised locally for its craft beer houses and was named “The Nation’s Best Beer Boulevard” by Men’s Journal and was created by HMSHost exclusively for San Diego. The architecture of Craft Brews takes its cues from the street location with natural wood, warm colours and soft lighting.
San Diego International Airport is Jer’s first stand-alone airport storefront (in Terminal 2 East) and brings Solana Beach’s store concept into the airport. Jerry Swain is the founder of Jer’s Chocolate since 2001 and has 16 airports nationwide.
Phil Pace created Phil’s BBQ in Mission Hills in 1998 and has several Southern California locations in addition to his first airport location.
Caffe’ Calabria has self-service “airpot” coffee stations featuring its own roasts and is under the development of Hudson Group as a part of the San Diego Bay News concept. Hudson Group Senior Vice President of Food & Beverage Tom Kornacki said that self-service coffee “airpots” are a successful staple in Hudson News’ newsstands and cafes across the country.
Caffe’ Calabria is a locally owned and operation with more than 20 years of experience in roasting coffee beans in small batches.
Some 26% of the businesses involved in the programme are DBE businesses. The number of concession employees at the airport will nearly double from 625 to approximately 1,200 when the programme is complete in 2014.
Concessionaires were restricted to pricing no more than +10% above street pricing, a policy that will be enforced by the airport.
