Satellite terminal at Munich Airport will officially open on 26 April

GERMANY. The opening date for the satellite terminal linked to Munich Airport’s T2 has been set for 26 April – exactly three months from today (26 January).

As reported, the facility features three core category duty free shops, 16 retail stores and seven food & beverage locations across 7,000sq m of space on two levels.

The range will feature German and international brands, well-known Bavarian retailers and local bars and restaurants. The commercial business will be managed by Munich Airport subsidiaries Eurotrade and Allresto as well as other partners such as HMSHost (in food).

With the capacity to handle 11 million passengers per year, the satellite terminal will boost the overall capacity of T2 to 36 million.

The official opening date was finalised by 60:40 joint venture partners Munich Airport and Lufthansa. The pair said final preparations in the last three months before opening would include the installation of technical equipment and interior work in the retail and dining areas.

In mid-March, businesses and government agencies will start moving into their stores and offices in the satellite terminal.

Integration test operations will also take place over 20 days before opening, simulating passenger handling processes and featuring a total of about 2,800 test passengers. For each of the two biggest test runs, 500 “˜extras’ will be on hand to play the role of airline passengers. Ease of navigation, completion of boarding and transfer process and the effectiveness of the signage will all be evaluated.
