The bin advertising programme allows advertising to be placed in the bottom of the security checkpoint bins and provides the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) with replacement bins and bin carts at no cost. Annual revenue is estimated at US$88,000 over the three-year (with two-year option) term of the contract.

Bin advertising will be provided at both Terminal A (primarily international flights) and Terminal B (primarily Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines) checkpoints.

Bins must be replaced no less than every four months, and 10% of the bins may be used by the City for its own advertising use. The advertising message and design will be provided by the City, with the concessionaire creating the printed advertisement and placing it on the bins.

San José International Airport served almost 4.2 million passengers in 2011. While San José has a strong domestic passenger base, international traffic currently includes flights to Guadalajara, Mexico. In January 2013, Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA) will start a service to Tokyo, with five flights a week.

“Mineta San José International Airport is focused on continuous improvement to our facilities and new revenue streams, both of which allow the airport to remain competitive in the market,” said SJC Director of Aviation Bill Sherry.

“We are pleased to offer a premium lounge for all our airline passengers in the New Year, which coincides with the arrival of ANA and the Boeing Dreamliner at SJC. This and other planned service upgrades will only enhance the excellent terminal experience that our customers tell us they are currently enjoying.”

SecurityPoint Media is an alternative media company providing products, services and marketing solutions on a proprietary basis. It provides bin advertising to 41 airports in the US, from small airports to large airports such as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Miami International Airport (MIA) and John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

President Joseph Ambrefe and his partner Doug Linehan founded the company in 2001 and were awarded the LAX contract in 2006. In 2008 TSA approved the programme for national roll-out and a patent was approved in 2009.

Brands that have already participated in the bin advertising programmes include Rolodex, Sony, Kyocera and the website Zappos.
