Setur Duty Free wins regional contract; opens Iraqi diplomatic store

The new Çukurova Airport is set to open in late 2014

TURKEY. Leading Turkish travel retailer Setur Duty Free will operate the duty free concession at the new Çukurova Airport in Adana, which is under construction and will open in late 2014.

The new facility will replace the existing airport, and is being built under the Build-Operate-Transfer model, with an initial capacity for 15 million passengers a year.

Setur Duty Free Business Development Director Kadir Ishakoglu told The Moodie Report: “It is situated in the commercial zone and harbour, and has a big catchment area – including many cities in the south of Turkey.”

In other news, Setur opened a downtown diplomatic store in Erbil, Iraq in May – marking its debut in this channel.

The 550sq m Erbil store is located on the site of a new Divan Hotel, one of the brands owned by Setur parent group Koc Holding. Alongside a core duty free range it features shop-in-shops dedicated to Omega and Montblanc, with a range of new brands, in particular in the eyewear and watch categories, to be added in the coming months.

“Because the store is located in the Divan Hotel, and attracts a high-spending customer profile, luxury brands and perfumes & cosmetics will be in big demand,” says Ishakoglu. “So far, beauty and liquor account for the greatest share of sales, at around 35% each.”

Setur is also nearing completion of refurbishment work at its Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport operations. There it will add 400sq m in Departures later this month, dedicated to destination merchandise. The space previously allocated to destination items will be devoted to an expansion of fragrances, skincare and make-up. New brands to be introduced in this area will include Hermès, The Body Shop, Sisley, Kiehl’s and Yves Rocher.

In a further development in Departures, a new corner dedicated to sports brand Nike will open in around 50sq m, and a new consumer electronics corner will also be added – both in the first half of 2013.
