Shanghai Hongqiao Airport to issue tenders for three key retail projects

Buoyed by a favourable passenger profile and a world-class brand mix, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 has become renowned as a high-end domestic shopping haven

CHINA. Three key tender opportunities at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 covering five retail locations are soon to be issued, The Moodie Davitt Report can reveal.

Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 is a domestic terminal, serving more than 50 key cities including Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Passenger volume has now essentially recovered to pre-COVID 2019 levels, the company said, noting that T2 enjoys excellent passenger flow and strong consumer purchasing power with business travellers accounting for about 70% of total traffic.

After a decade of continuous upgrading, T2’s Luxury Boulevard has grown from just six brands when the airport opened in 2010 to 21 internationally renowned first-tier luxury houses.

It’s not simply about the number of brands but also the quality level, with a stellar line-up now including Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Dior and Gucci. More than a third of these stores were the respective brands’ first airport shops in Mainland China.

Since the beginning of this year, high-end luxury brands such as Loro Piana, Burberry, Celine, Prada, and La Mer have opened in the luxury and international department store zones. They will be joined by Aesop, La Prairie and Diptyque on a phased basis through to the end of this year and the beginning of 2024.

Taking into account the dominance of business travellers, airport commercial management benchmarked high-end downtown shopping malls to gain a deep understanding of the psychology and shopping needs of T2 consumers.

This helped facilitate and optimise the brand offer and combinations. The company said it plans to substitute more in-demand brands for lower-performing ones as appropriate and cater to passengers’  diverse consumption needs.

“We will devote ourselves to better brands; more complete categories; higher quality; and enhanced experiences,” the airport company said. “We plan to strengthen the attraction of airport consumption, promote a better passenger shopping experience, and then transform it into commercial efficiency.

“Through this project we will create a unique and eye-catching offer across multiple categories, including luxury, sports, fashion accessories, jewellery and watches, and perfume and cosmetics.”
