Shanghai’s cruise industry to welcome opening of duty free stores

CHINA. A duty free shop is being planned to serve passengers at the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, located at the North Bund area in Shanghai’s Hongkou District, according to a report in Shanghai Daily last Thursday.

Citing Xie Rongrong, a political advisor with the District, the report said that the Global Duty Free Store will feature “the world’s major luxury brands” and mainly serve tourists from abroad.

Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal has created a joint venture with China Duty Free Group to run the business, The Moodie Report understands.

Currently, foreign tourists can only shop at duty free stores at the departure terminal buildings at local cruise liner harbours. With the opening of the new store, they will be able to shop right after they disembark from the ships.

In addition, there are plans to open another duty free store at the Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal in Baoshan District, the Shanghai Tourism Bureau announced.

A downtown duty free shop is also being planned, in a bid to attract consumers who purchase luxury brands overseas to spend more onshore.

The Shanghai Development and Reform Commission has already submitted proposals for the shop to China’s central government for final approval, said the agency’s Vice Director Zhou Ya.

The North Bund area, seeking to transform itself into “China’s Boston”, is building a national-level shipping service base and cruise liner development zone to attract large cruise liners.

The area will provide commercial facilities totaling some 300,000sq m, including restaurants, cafes and shops, according to officials.
