South African spirits and wine producer Distell has partnered Big Five Duty Free to promote Bain’s Cape Mountain at Cape Town International and OR Tambo International airports throughout April.
Inspired by the Cape Mountains and its natural beauty, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky was named the World’s Best Grain Whisky at the 2013 World Whisky Awards, ahead of those from traditional whisky-producing countries such as Ireland, Scotland and the USA.
The promotions include tastings at OR Tambo daily and at Cape Town four days a week, plus a gwp offer at both duty free shops of a branded notebook and complimentary 50ml. OR Tambo is also running a competition featuring a Cape Mountains-inspired interactive element involving a waterfall and a maze. The whisky retails at R215 (US$20,43).

Distell Global Marketing Manager South Africa Whiskies Eliska Botha said the promotional area at the two airports offers “great visibility” for the brand.
“Since being awarded as the World’s Best Grain Whisky in 2013, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is one of the most talked about whiskies in the world. Through this promotion we now have the opportunity to introduce the whisky to travellers from across the globe, share this extraordinary whisky inspired by the Cape Mountains and its unique taste profile that has been captivating whisky connoisseurs from around the world,” she said.
Crafted at the James Sedgwick’s distillery near South Africa’s Bainskloof Pass, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is a distinct blend of fine South African grain and water flowing over 850 million year old sandstone and indigenous fynbos. It is double-matured and matured for three years in casks previously used for Bourbon before being revatted into a fresh set of casks for a further maturation period.
