Spain’s airports serve record passenger numbers in 2023

SPAIN. Airports in the Aena network in Spain served 283.1 million passengers in 2023, a new annual record. The figure was up by +16.2% year-on-year and +2.9% more than in 2019.

Aena Chairman Maurici Lucena said: “These record figures in air transport are fundamental for the economic and social development of Spain. We should all congratulate ourselves for these results. Airlines which, like Aena, suffered the harsh consequences of the pandemic, are now transporting more passengers than ever.”

Madrid-Barajas Airport served more than 60 million passengers in 2023 as the Aena network recovered fully from the pandemic

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in the network at 60.2 million, up +18.9% compared to 2022. Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat was next at 49.9 million (+19.9% year-on-year) followed by Palma de Mallorca at 31.1 million (+8.9%); Málaga-Costa del Sol at 22.3 million (+21.1%); Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández at 15.7 million (+19.2%); Gran Canaria at 13.9 million (+12.4%) Tenerife Sur at 12.3 million (+14%) and Valencia at 9.9 million (+22.6%).

In December, the Aena airport network recorded 20.1 million passengers, +12.8% more than in the same month in 2022. Within this, international passenger numbers climbed by +16.4% year-on-year. ✈
