GERMANY. Munich airport’s new T2, which opens on 29 June, will feature 110 retail and restaurant units extending over three levels in one of Europe’s most state-of-the-art passenger facilities.
Some 18,000sq m (193,680 sq ft) of retail and catering space are available, of which 90% is already accounted for. The diversity of retail and catering offer reflects Munich’s international hub status as well as the strong ties to its Bavarian roots.
Unlike shopping at Munich´s original T1, the new T2 focuses commercial activities within the airside areas. Transferring passengers of Lufthansa and Star Alliance partner airlines, who will comprise the majority of passengers in T2, will have access to approximately 70% of all stores and catering facilities.
Stores in the T2 public areas (landside) will be tailored to visitors, employees and meeters/greeters as well as passengers. Shopping opportunities on this level – which will be used primarily by arriving passengers and by travellers taking the S-Bahn rail link to the airport – include the Edeka supermarket, Wünsche specialty bakery, Ringeltaube and Marketplace delicatessens, Oliviva Mediterranean specialties, Hümmer hand-made chocolates, Trendzone jewellery, Esprit fashions, Görtz shoes, a newsstand, Wenning Florists and Nokia mobile telephones and gift articles.
The overall mix of retail and food & beverage in the arrivals area was designed to ideally complement the existing facilities situated on the same level in the Munich Airport Center. Level 04, which houses most check-in facilities along with the central passenger security checkpoints, will be used for all departures to Schengen destinations. Before passing through security gates, passengers will have access to more retail outlets such as the Sky Shop (operated by Lufthansa), Müller Brot (a bakery), a press outlet, Timberland store, confectionery shops (Leysieffer, Reber, Lindt), Sisley boutique and Buyern (a Bavarian/German souvenir store). Making its debut on Munich airport’s retail scene is the Beate Uhse erotic boutique.
Passengers will reach the main “˜marketplace’ after clearing security checkpoints. Shopping opportunities airside area include numerous fashion retailers such as René Lezard, Hermès, MaxMara, Marc O’Polo, Boss, Zegna, Escada, Aigner, Bvlgari, Ferragamo, Benneton and Bogner. Other offerings include LaPerla (lingerie), Tie Rack, Bric’s (leathergoods), jewellery by Swarovski and Gautam, Schönweitz (designer eyewear) and a newsstand. A strong Travel Value offer is also represented by a 600sq m (6,500sq ft) store operated by Eurotrade, the retail subsidiary of Flughafen Munchen. Eurotrade will also operate a Look watches and accessories store.
Another major attraction for Shengen travellers is the first-ever “BMW Lifestyle Flagship Store” with replica cars, clothing, accessories and other non-motorized BMW merchandise. In addition to a Benetton children’s fashion store and a Spiel + Freizeit toy store, there are two large play areas equipped by Lego. Additional services include a pharmacy and two American Express exchange booths.
In non-Schengen departures on Level 05 (immediately above Schengen departures) the line up includes everything from high fashion (MaxMara, Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Trussardi, Sand of Copenhagen, Burberry, Pal Zilieri, Jaques Britt) and traditional Bavarian wear (Habsburg) to sportswear (Helly Hansen), accessories (Tie Rack, Cartier, Bvlgari, Montblanc), delicacies, jewellery (Blue Spirit, Gautam, Michaela Frey), shoes (Valleverde) and souvenirs (Herrmann).
