GERMANY. Travel food & beverage specialist SSP has opened three new outlets at Frankfurt Airport’s new Pier A-Plus.
It is estimated that the new business will generate in excess of €8 million annually and has already created 70 new jobs.
As reported, the new Pier welcomed its first passengers today and features 12,600sq m of commercial space including a selection of highly regarded local, regional and international food & beverage brands. SSP said each of its outlets was chosen to complement the high-end retail offer at the Pier.
Slick Italian style: Lucullus Nero makes its airport debut at the new Pier |
Italian concept Lucullus Nero makes its airport debut with a 130-seat restaurant. Renowned Frankfurt restaurateur Calogero Gallo has been a culinary advisor for the menu which features a modern interpretation of traditional Italian fare, including spaghetto aglio olio e pepperoncino (spaghetti with garlic, oil and chilli peppers).
It also offers a range of pizzas, a number of which are Lucullus Nero specialities, including goats’ cheese & balsamic cream, and buffalo ricotta with sausage & pistachio. A selection of snacks including focaccia and paninis are available to take away.

The Reingold Bar, a popular downtown concept, joins the line-up with a 100-seater outlet at the new Pier A-Plus. The drinks menu features an extensive selection of “˜glamorous’ cocktails including Dry Martinis, Manhattans and Daiquiris, with a range of fine wines and premium beers.
The food menu includes shrimp salad and sourdough sandwiches filled with Black Forest ham or brie with fig mustard and walnuts. There is also a selection of German-styled tapas including mini pork escalopes, dates wrapped in bacon or smoked salmon on mini rösti.
Commenting on The Reingold’s décor, SSP said: “The Reingold Bar evokes the glamour of the city during its 1920s heyday. With its décor of lustrous golds and sumptuous furnishings including deep-buttoned leather Chesterfield sofas, the bar offers a contemporary twist on the style of Burlesque.”
SSP has also introduced 30-seater Japanese concept Temaki Bar, which offers a selection of nigiri, maki, sashimi and California rolls and a of temaki (cone-shaped sushi rolls). All dishes are freshly prepared at the counter by Japanese sushi chefs. This is the second Temaki Bar at the airport with the first outlet located in the Around the World food court in Terminal 1.

The new outlets will operate alongside SSP’s existing coffee house concept Perfect Day, set to be refurbished for re-opening in September 2013. It serves a range of own-grown coffees from India, together with an array of snacks and sandwiches to eat in or take away. Planned as part of the refurbishment, an automated system will change the lighting to suit the mood for different times of the day.
CEO of SSP Germany, Austria and Switzerland Cornelius Everke said the new business will strengthen SSP’s position as a leader in the German travel food market. “We have been operating a substantial business here at Frankfurt for many years, and we are delighted to be building on this achievement,” he said. “We’re very proud of the new outlets, and we are confident that they will do much to contribute to the success of Frankfurt Airport’s impressive new terminal facility.”
Fraport Senior Food & Beverage Manager of Fraport added: “We are very excited about the opening of the new Pier, which is an important development for us at Fraport, our partners at Lufthansa and the wider region. I’m certain that SSP will deliver the same high quality performance in running the outlets as they did during the building phase, and that these new bars and restaurants will significantly enhance the passenger experience at Frankfurt Airport.”
The new €700 million Pier A-Plus was created by Fraport to offer an enhanced service for Lufthansa and Star Alliance intercontinental passengers, and has the capacity to handle four A380 and 747 aircraft simultaneously at any one time. Volker Bouffier, the Prime Minister of the German federal state of Hesse was among the guests at the official opening ceremony of the facility on 2 October.
