NORWAY. Global travel restaurateur SSP Group has secured a contract to renew its operations at Oslo Gardermoen Airport. The agreement will see a raft of new bar, restaurant and café venues open.
Five of the openings – Tigerstaden, Bjørn’s Backyard, Kaffetår and Parken (two venues) – will deliver a strong sense of place, SSP pledged. The remaining concepts will be a mix of proprietary SSP brands and international favourites.
The wine bar/restaurant Tigerstaden, created for Oslo Airport, takes its name from an affectionate nickname for the city, described in a poem by renowned Norwegian author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnsons in 1870.
The venue will offer an authentic range of Norwegian foods served in wine pairings crafted in consultation with leading Norwegian sommeliers. State-of-the-art technology will be deployed to enable even the most high-end wines to be served by the glass without compromising quality.

Bjørn’s Backyard is inspired by Oslo’s convivial backyard culture and urban-style family life. It will serve international favourites with a street-food vibe in an informal environment offering options for dine-in and grab and go.

SSP’s café concept Parken is designed to capture the relaxing charm of the Norwegian capital’s famous parks and public gardens. Two units will offer a wide selection of barista-made drinks alongside classic Scandinavian pastries and light bites.
A Norwegian coffee shop concept Kaffetår will incorporate Instagram-friendly architectural elements from the Norgesglasset cocktail bar, the previous SSP venue at the location.
Trattoria Tavolare will offer a taste of Italy at two locations in the international and domestic terminals, respectively.

SSP proprietory brands Ritazza and Barino Café & Bar will be joined by a new O’Learys sports bar in the domestic terminal. Starbucks, which made its first Norway appearance in partnership with SSP in 2012, also joins the mix.
SSP Continental Europe CEO Jeremy Fennell commented: “This latest win is a testament to the strength of SSP’s team and their relationship with [airport operator] Avinor. Our partnership has endured for a quarter of a century and we have been operating at Oslo since before the new airport opened in 1998.

“More than half of all Norway’s air passengers pass through Oslo Airport and we’re looking forward to continuing to rise to the challenge of making a visit to one of our bars or restaurants the best part of the journey for travellers at this important global hub.”
Avinor EVP Commercial Joachim Lupnaav Johnsen said: “Over a number of decades, SSP has been our partner, helping us achieve our business goals and improving passenger experience at our airports.
“Their ability to bring outstanding international brands supported by their deep understanding of the local market means that they are a trusted partner in whom we have much confidence as we move to this next chapter of our history.”
