CHINA. Sales at Sunrise Duty Free’s stores at Shanghai Pudong International Airport have been growing by +25%-30% annually, according to Chairman Fred Kiang.

In a rare interview, Kiang told The Moodie Report that tobacco is still the strongest category, but that perfumes and cosmetics are producing the highest percentage growth.

Sunrise Duty Free was awarded a 10-year contract to run liquor and tobacco duty free retail at Pudong in 1999. It took over the perfume and cosmetics category two years later.

“We’ve made major contributions in concession income to the airport, and they are pleased,” Kiang said.

The company’s experience and performance at Pudong Airport undoubtedly played a part in convincing Beijing Capital International Airport that Sunrise was the best candidate to operate all duty free retail at the airport earlier this year.

In July, the airport company awarded Sunrise a 10-year contract to take charge of Beijing Airport’s duty free retail operations.

Kiang said: “At this moment, we are still in the process of a changeover. Changes will come gradually, and there will be no major transformation at the current terminal. But in terms of minor facelifts, you can expect to see immediate changes.”
