Suunto has workouts down to a T – 18/10/06

The Suunto t1

FINLAND. Suunto has introduced a new range of “intelligent” heart rate monitors for people of all fitness levels that are said to be a break from tradition.

The hi-tech Finnish watchmaker’s travel retail business is handled by Dutch firm Sea & Sky Supply which will be present at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes (Stand number: Blue Village F30).

Suunto’s new t range of “intelligent” sports watches are designed to help maximise the results of every workout, whatever the wearer’s fitness level.

The Suunto t1 aims to focus on the essentials – such as heart rate and calories burned – with an emphasis on simplicity. With minimal instruction, walkers, runners and cyclists can use the t1 to achieve health and fitness goals, be they weight loss or cardiovascular improvement.

Described as more than a heart rate monitor, the Suunto t3 indicates the total aerobic benefit of each workout and has a real-time Training Effect to guard against over or under-training: “Training Effect keeps you on-target for achieving your goal, whether it’s weight loss, cardiovascular health or shaving minutes off a marathon,” say the makers.

The Suunto t3 and t4

Equipped with Suunto Coach – which generates a five-day plan for improving aerobic condition and indicates which days to work out – the Suunto t4 is designed for athletes in training.

The t4 monitors progress and makes workout recommendations for frequency, duration and intensity. The t4 constantly adapts, maintaining an up-to-date plan to suit the wearer’s changing physiology.

Designed for athletes and trainers, the Suunto t6 helps maximise the training effect of every workout with a detailed analysis of seven body parameters, including heart rate, energy consumption, Training Effect and EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption, which indicates the amount of extra oxygen that the body needs to recover after exercise).

Suunto Training Manager is an integral part of the t6, storing and organising training sessions to allow athletes to analyse their performance and create training plans.

Another major award for Suunto?

In other news, the Suunto D9 dive computer – the world’s first wrist-sized computer that combines a compass with wireless cylinder pressure measurement – has been entered in the German Design Award competition, which recognises top performance in the field of product design and communication design.

The D9 dive computer was brought onto the market in 2004, combining a compass and dive computer for the first time in a single instrument, as well as measuring cylinder pressure wirelessly. Measurement data from a sensor in the cylinder is transmitted to the D9 wirelessly, similar to the way a heart-rate sensor in a chest band sends data to a wrist-top monitor.

The Suunto D9

Sponsored by the Federal Minister for Economics and Technology and organized by the German Design Council, the German Design Award is the country’s only official design competition. It considers innovation of design and technology, design strategy, utility, usefulness and sustainability.

It is precondition of entry that the product must have already received a national or international award. The Suunto D9 won the Finnish Fennia Prize.

Entry is also restricted to products or services which were available on the German market at the time of nomination and whose market launch took place no longer than five years ago. The winner will be announced on 9 February 2007.
