Swatch reaches the edge with new urban designs – 19/07/04

Life Is A Matter of Moments collection from Swatch
The styles, described by the company as “a true departure from standard watch designs”, feature “supernatural elements like mythical serpents, fiery dragons and tattoo-inspired markings”.

SWITZERLAND. Swatch, the official timekeeper of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, has introduced a new collection of watches inspired by skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding.

The styles, described by the company as “a true departure from standard watch designs”, feature “supernatural elements like mythical serpents, fiery dragons and tattoo-inspired markings”. They are described by Swatch as “extreme” and “off-the-edge” designs.

The bold designs appeal not only to young surfers and skaters, but also to Generation X (ages 30 to 40) travelling professionals with disposable income who still enjoy the extreme sports of their youth.

Themed “Life’s A Matter of Moments”, the collection consists of:

Surfer Babe: Not a girlie watch, this model is designed to appeal to the independent, free-spirited woman who can surf as well as the man. It comes in red, with an anime-style surfer-chick motif on the bright red plastic strap with pink buckle and loop. White Arabic numerals decorate the burgundy dial.

Serpent Soup: The model, featuring a trio of entwined snakes in green, white, black and grey, complements the skateboarding gear. The dial, encased in green plastic case, reveals the serpent’s head and is decorated with green numerals.

Skulling time: With its skeleton design and black strap, this model suits the juvenile Goth skateboarder more than the sculler. A rubber “˜skull n’ flowers’ motif embossed the strap. A white skull graces the dial, which also features black hands with reflective centres and red second hands.

Magmalife: The watch features large red and black silicon strap with “fiery” design. A black dial displays Arabic numerals in silver with a red outline. The hands are in shiny silver.

Dragon’s Revenge: The dial features a green dragon. The synthetic strap is in black, grey, white and shades of green. The hour and second hands are white, and the minute hand is black.

Dragon’s Angel: Anybody familiar with the Maori fish hook synonymous with New Zealand’s indigenous culture would recognise the motif on the dial and the strap. Again, the dragon is the chosen subject, appearing on the strap and on the dial in red outline. An abstract, white female figure appears on the 12-hour strap, with the continuation of the design on the six-hour strap. White hour and minute hands on a black dial mark the time.
