SWEDEN. Swedish Match has successfully introduced its Borkum Riff Wood Tip Cigars into Asian markets.
Several months ago, Swedish Match’s Hong Kong divison started selling the range of slender, flavoured cigars characterised by a wooden mouthpiece under the Borkum Riff brand name.
Four flavours were introduced: Creamy Coconut, French Vanilla, Sweet Melon and Silky Peach.
Commenting on the launch, Marcel Verhoeven, International Brand Director Cigars at the Swedish Match International Division, said: “These cigars perfectly suit the expectations of the new consumer with their modest size, mild character, sweet taste, individual packaging in cellophane and presentation in a distinctive cigar tin typical of this renowned brand.”
More than 7 million wood-tipped cigars have been shipped. Reaction has been extremely positive, said Verhoeven, not only from China, but also from Macau, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand.
“Although it is still a little premature to predict future sales, the expectations are high,” he said. “The first order for the Japanese market has been placed, and undoubtedly, customers from around the world will soon be placing their orders.”
Additional taste varieties, including Cherry, have gone into production and these will be introduced in the very near future, he added.
“The introduction of these Borkum Riff Wood Tip Cigars perfectly complements our cigar range, and we are now in a better position to venture into markets where Swedish Match International does not yet have strong representation and to claim a healthy share of these markets in the future,” said Verhoeven.
