Sydney Airport makes major investment in curved wall and digital screens at farewell point

AUSTRALIA. Sydney Airport has unveiled new features in the departures area of Terminal 1, its international terminal, including a refurbished farewell point.

The farewell point is now home to a 53-metre curved wall incorporating more than 10,000 lineal metres of Tasmanian oak, as well as 25 metres of digital screens displaying images of Sydney.

This forms part of the airport’s ongoing investment of more than AU$1 million (US$679,203) dollars per day in key facilities and services.

Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert was joined by Stuart Ayres, New South Wales Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney, to officially launch the space.

Culbert said: “This is one of the most tagged social spots in Sydney and draws a huge selfie crowd. The upgrade has turned the experience into something special for travellers and we’re already seeing it feature heavily on Instagram and other social channels, which is really positive and a great advertisement for Sydney.

“By opening up the area, we’ve also effectively doubled the circulation space which will significantly improve the journey through to passport control – especially during peaks when we’ve got a lot of people jetting off at the same time.”

Ayres acknowledged that Sydney Airport plays a vital role in driving tourism for Australia. He added: “It’s a welcome sight to see their [the airport’s] continued investment in improving the experience and creating a lasting memory for international visitors.”

The launch coincides with the airport’s recent rebrand and the airport says it will shortly unveil further works across all three terminals.
