Tax Free World Association confirms move to broaden membership – 25/10/07

FRANCE. An Extraordinary General Meeting of Tax Free World Association (TFWA) today confirmed the move to widen its membership, which can now include retailers – though only as affiliate members.

TFWA President Erik Juul-Mortensen said: “The vote was passed by a big majority at our EGM, and follows a major review of our activities. It involved much questioning of what TFWA is and what it should be, and assessed all the risks and opportunities involved. Ultimately we decided that we would be more reflective of our motto “˜by the trade, for the trade’. This is a big step forward in the history of the association.”

Retailers will not be able to join as individual companies, but through their regional associations, and as affiliates rather than full members. This means they will have no voting rights within the association.

Juul-Mortensen did not rule out a move to full membership for non-supplier companies in future. He added: “We have not pre-determined how things will evolve with new members from outside the traditional supply community, or the activities that TFWA will undertake – and whether that would involve a more active lobbying function, for example. It will really depend on the will and the interest of the members.”

At today’s TFWA Annual General Meeting Juul-Mortensen was re-elected for another one-year term as President. He said that this would be his final year in the role.
