HONG KONG. The Green Market restaurant at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), managed by Plaza Premium Lounge Management, is presenting diners with a traditional Lunar New Year dish called Lou Hei this spring.
The Green Market has partnered The Terrace, a Chinese restaurant located at the Airport World Trade Centre Club, to make the dish available throughout the season.
Originating from Malaysia and Singapore, Lou Hei is usually enjoyed by a big group of people during the festive season, and is believed to bring good luck for the rest of the year.
Also known as the “˜dish of fortune’, it is made from eight ingredients of different colours for a vibrant presentation. The main ingredient, Norwegian salmon, is served on the bed of finely sliced jellyfish, crackers, egg, ginger and and vegetables including cucumber, carrot and cabbage.
At The Green Market, the dish is served the traditional way with the restaurant’s homemade sesame sauce and Japanese soy sauce. Priced at HK$58 (US$7.50), this dish can be ordered as a starter.
According to Chinese custom, the ingredients are added one at a time onto a big round plate, and with each addition, everyone has to recite auspicious phrases until all eight ingredients are mixed. Diners then use their chopsticks to toss the ingredients up in the air – the higher the better – while saying “Lou Hei, Lou Hei” (“good things will follow”).
