The Scent of Departure captures the city in a bottle

FRANCE. The Scent of Departure, a new global fragrance concept available exclusively from airport duty free shops, is offering travellers the chance to bring home an “olfactory memento” from their trips abroad.

Fragrance as destination merchandise? Why not? Some locations (I better not name names) may be slightly less fragrant than others but there’s no reason that virtually every major city in the travel retail universe couldn’t have a dedicated fragrance.

Developed by Parisian Gerald Ghislain and Magali Senequier, the creators of the luxury perfume brand Histoires de Parfums, The Scent of Departure is a new collection of fragrances designed to capture the essence and spirit of selected cities.

Each fragrance has been inspired by and created exclusively for a specific city, and comes in bottles labelled with the three-letter symbol of the airports that serve them. The collection will thus give each duty free shop range its very own local footprint, the company said.

With its slender skyscraper glass bottle design and “˜boarding pass’ identification tag, The Scent of Departure is a targeted product that will be available as special editions, gift sets and coffrets. It will also be complemented by additional The Scent of Departure themed merchandise.

From the start of April onwards, the collection will be available exclusively and for the first time from Gebr Heinemann shops at airports in Vienna, Budapest, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Istanbul.

Full global rollout is scheduled for autumn 2011.
