INTERNATIONAL. Thomas Henningsen, the former Travel Retail Manager of Hugo Boss, Puma and Sand fashion brands, has set up his own consultancy business for fashion and lifestyle companies wishing to enter the travel retail market.

His firm, oneeighty, aims to advise and support fashion and lifestyle companies in capitalising on travel retail opportunities. It is based in the Danish fashion capital of Copenhagen but has global ambitions.

Speaking about the opportunities he sees for fashion and lifestyle brands in the travel retail market, Henningsen said: “Travel retail is a world of opportunities, a truly international shop window for fashion and lifestyle companies with a focus on luxury and “˜affordable luxury’. As fashion and lifestyle companies enter travel retail to pursue these opportunities, there will be a need to support, guide and equip these companies with best practice. This is where oneeighty step in.”

Henningsen emphasised that oneeighty is neither an agent nor a distributor. “We are consultants,” he said. “We are a team of individual specialists. Big enough to implement retail expansion strategies and inject know-how, skills and best practice into an organisation. Small enough to take on single projects from negotiating a point of sale and organising trade press publicity to optimising product allocation and floor plans.

“We believe that successful initiatives are managed by the right people. We therefore focus on performance management and provide tools, theories and mental training. All of which are designed to prepare and support management in taking on new challenges like travel retail. This is how we create value.”

oneeighty specialises in all areas of the business, including: negotiating business models and financial terms; organising trade exhibitions; managing trade public relations; developing travel retail and brand management strategies; adapting fixture concepts; profiling points of sale; and securing retail partnerships.

Henningsen believes that only a few fashion and lifestyle companies have mastered the art of travel retail. “Taking on travel retail is not an easy task,” he noted. “It may require a combination of strategies, know-how and competencies. And maybe above all it requires the right people to believe in these.”
