USA. New retail and F&B outlets are coming to Tucson International Airport as part of a US$28.3 million terminal improvement programme.
The current checkpoint area at the Arizona airport will be redesigned to add retail shops, F&B outlets and other services, such as business centres and children’s play areas. A pre-security restaurant and combined gift shop in the centre gallery will also be among the additions.
In the first phase of the project, from June 2016 to October 2017, the new concessionaire locations will be prepared. Old concessions and the Flybar will be demolished, including the stairway and escalators at the centre gallery.
The new retail concepts are expected to open in December 2017 while F&B outlets will begin operating in January 2018, according to the airport.
The majority of funding for the project, which is called ‘A Brighter TUS’, will come from the Federal Aviation Administration’s passenger facility charge programme, with the rest provided by the Tucson Airport Authority. The scope of the project also includes expanded security checkpoints and improved infrastructure.
“This project provides us with the opportunity to enhance the customer experience through improved space utilisation,” said TAA President and CEO Bonnie Allin.
“The larger security checkpoint allows for newer security technology and better passenger flow. The improved concessions will provide a greater variety of food and retail opportunities. This is going to take our airport to another level of excellence, and we’re excited to begin construction.”
