UK aviation industry hails axing of COVID tests for fully vaccinated arrivals to England

UK. Stakeholders in the UK aviation industry have welcomed today’s government announcement that people arriving in England from abroad will no longer have to take day two COVID tests if they are fully vaccinated.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed that the changes will be introduced from 4am on 11 February, in time for the key school half-term holiday travel booking period.

A day two test has been required for all travellers into the UK continuously since 17 May last year.

Rules have also been eased for unvaccinated travellers, with the government removing the need to take a day eight test. They will, however, still need pre-departure and day two tests.

“With Britain reopened for business, we’re looking forward to helping people across the country get back to visiting exciting new places, finding fresh trading opportunities overseas, and travelling to see friends and loved ones again” – MAG Group CEO Charlie Cornish

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – which have previously followed England’s lead – will decide their own changes to the COVID testing rules.

Airlines UK Chief Executive Tim Aldersdale described the rule change as “a landmark day for passengers, businesses and UK plc”.

In a statement, he added: “Nearly two years since the initial COVID restrictions were introduced, today’s announcement brings international travel towards near-normality for the fully vaccinated, and at last into line with hospitality and the domestic economy.

Tim Aldersdale lauded the timing of the announcement, with a key period for holiday bookings from the UK fast approaching

“It will offer further reassurance to those planning to travel, both overseas and into the UK, and demonstrates again that following the success of the vaccine programme, the UK can lead the world in our recovery from the pandemic.

“With the all-important half-term week approaching, passengers should now get booking, and airlines look forward to using the connectivity they’re proud to facilitate to turbocharge the economic recovery for all of the UK.”

Charlie Cornish, Group CEO of MAG, which operates three UK airports, described the easing of testing rules as “excellent news for our sector’s recovery”.

He added: “This change will be welcomed by the millions of vaccinated people who are desperate to travel and will now be able to do so – restriction-free – for the first time in more than a year.

“The latest research shows travel restrictions do very little to stop the spread of variants like Omicron. Removing them will ensure the many cultural, social and economic benefits of international travel can be realised without any major impact on public health.

“With Britain reopened for business, we’re looking forward to helping people across the country get back to visiting exciting new places, finding fresh trading opportunities overseas, and travelling to see friends and loved ones again.”
