US Airways introduces premium meal option for international Economy passengers

US. US Airways has become the first US carrier to offer international economy passengers a premium meal option. The DineFresh pre-order service allows customers flying from the US to Europe, the Middle East and South America to book their choice of hot meals.

Customers can choose from two meal options, each costing US$19.99 and available up to 24 hours before departure. The options are: a vegetarian meal consisting of a ‘Mediterranean-style’ appetiser, Portobello mushroom tortellini, Caprese salad with balsamic dressing, and turtle cheesecake for dessert; or a protein meal that includes a classic shrimp (prawn) cocktail, citrus-marinated chicken skewers, seasonal grilled vegetables, and crême brulée cheesecake for dessert.

US Airlines Inflight Services Vice President Hector Adler said: “The new DineFresh meal option, which is paired with complimentary wine, gives our customers more choices when traveling internationally in Economy. With this new option, US Airways becomes the first US-based carrier to offer a premium meal experience for customers in the main cabin.”

The US Airways DineFresh meal options aim to provide a wider choice for passengers

Customers traveling on flights where DineFresh meals are offered will be notified in advance via email as to their availability and can visit the DineFresh web page to order.

The airline is also introducing several new items to its MarketPlace range of snacks, meals and beverages available for purchase on domestic and international flights.

The company has added Shock Top, a Belgian-style wheat beer with a hint of orange, to its drinks menu. A sparkling wine option is also being added on selected trans-Atlantic flights. Beer, wine and spirits are available for US$7 each alongside Stirrings premium cocktail mixers (US$8) and sparkling wine (US$9). Based on customer input, the airline is also adding the popular spicy cherry soda Pibb Xtra to its complimentary line-up of sparkling Coca-Cola beverages.

Three new snack lines are also being added: Brent and Sam’s Chocolate Chip Cookies (US$3 each); Emerald Whole Cashews (US$3 each); and The Original Chex Mix (US$3.49). Food options range from US$3 for snacks to USA$8 for fresh meals.

In other news, from today (2 August) all US Airways international flights will only accept credit and debit card payment for onboard purchases, in line with the cashless system adopted for domestic US Airways flights in 2010. US Airways Express flights will remain cash only.
