CANADA. Vancouver International Airport Authority has added four new specialty shops to the airport’s US Departures area retail offer.
The new stores, available to USA-bound travellers once they have cleared security, are Christmas in Vancouver, Crabtree & Evelyn, Roots and Vancouver Kitchen. All four shops are operated by North American retailer Hudson Group. These openings mark the completion of a three-phase expansion of YVR’s US Departures (Transborder) area.
“We’re pleased to celebrate the completion of our Transborder Retail Expansion program at YVR which offers US-bound travellers the most extensive selection of shops and services of any airport in Canada,” said Vancouver International Airport Authority Vice President, Commercial Development David Huffer.
“This development was made possible following the successful negotiations that resulted in the change in value of products that could be sold in this post-security area, and by our strong partnership with Hudson Group, our retail partner of choice following a worldwide tender competition,” Huffer added. “Once again, Hudson Group has exceeded our expectations with appealing concepts, great product selection and store designs that complement the overall theme of the development.”
The newly-renovated area is themed after one of Vancouver’s oldest residential neighbourhoods, Shaughnessy, which dates back to the early 1900s. Storefronts reflect the estate-like character of the area’s heritage structures, with elaborate wood detailing designed to look like balconies and porches.
Just as Shaughnessy was built with winding boulevards that followed the contours of the local terrain, the new retail area has meandering walkways that coalesce at a unique fountain designed with glass panels that represents the city and its waterways.
To mark the opening of the new shops, YVR will hold a launch event for US-bound travellers post-security at Vancouver Kitchen on 26 July. The celebration will feature a cooking demonstration by Roger Planiden, Executive Chef at Globe@YVR, The Fairmont Vancouver Airport’s signature fine dining restaurant, as well as live entertainment.
“We are proud and honoured to partner with Vancouver International Airport Authority and delighted to celebrate together the opening of this new portion of the airport,” said Joseph DiDomizio, Executive Vice President, Hudson Group. “The US Departures area is both vibrant and welcoming. The management and associates at our four new stores look forward to providing the travellers and employees of YVR with a compelling product mix, along with the highest levels of customer service.”
