CHINA. Anyone unsure about the current COVID-19 outbreak’s impact on Hainan province should watch this powerful film produced by our colleagues at Hainan International Media Center (sister company to Hainan Hinews Media Co, with whom The Moodie Davitt Report has a strategic partnership).
“The Hainan you love will recover soon. Let’s hold out a little longer for the storm to pass, the sun to shine and a rainbow to appear. The blossoms will bloom and we will meet again.”
Shot earlier this month as the outbreak raged in Sanya, forcing the closure of the region’s duty free shops (and later those in Haikou), A Love Letter to Hainan portrays how seriously the authorities are taking the situation and the measures that have been implemented to overcome it.
“Thanks to you, love and hope have spread faster than the virus,” the voiceover says. “Thanks to everyone who has come from far to fight. Thanks to everyone who held Hainan in their hearts. Thanks to everyone who quietly dedicated themselves. Thanks to everyone who has given their all for Hainan.
“The Hainan you love will recover soon. Let’s hold out a little longer for the storm to pass, the sun to shine and a rainbow to appear. The blossoms will bloom and we will meet again.”
As reported earlier today, the storm does appear to be passing with new locally transmitted COVID cases falling sharply over the past two days and the Haikou duty free stores reopening today.
