Viracopos seeks further Departures duty free proposals

BRAZIL. Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos is seeking duty free store proposals to augment the Dufry concession in the Departures area of its new terminal.

The airport in Campinas, São Paulo state, is considering one or two additional Departures stores in a total space of 600sq m, in addition to the store concession awarded already to Dufry.

“We have space for other duty free companies, and are looking at having one or two more stores,” said Aluizio Margarido, Commercial Manager for Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos.

“In Brazil all the airport retail looks much the same and we would like to change this by having more duty free stores in Departures with different products.”

These might be stores specialising in liquor or cosmetics, he indicated, with the proviso that there would not be competition with products in Dufry’s duty free store in Departures.

On 5 April Dufry announced it had secured a 10-year contract to operate duty free shops at Viracopos.

It will open a 237sq m Arrivals and 87sq m Departures store in the existing terminal, before opening in the new terminal in 2014.

Dufry will be the exclusive duty free retailer in the new terminal’s Arrivals area, with a 550sq m store (under Brazilian law an airport can have only one Arrivals duty free store).

But Margarido confirmed discussions are active with other duty free retailers also.

Interested parties should follow the Expression of Interest and Request for Proposal process currently underway (as reported).

“Negotiations will be based on a fixed rental and variable fee,” Margarido told The Moodie Report. “We will be looking for good brands.”

EOIs are open until 26 April. A 30-day RFP process will begin from mid-May, with shortlisted parties invited into negotiations from mid-June.

The 145,000sq m terminal will have 11,000sq m of commercial space, and will be linked to a new parking building, services centre and accessways
