POLAND. Warsaw Modlin Airport has unveiled plans to expand its commercial space to accommodate new retail stores and dining outlets. The expanded zone will open by mid-2022, according to senior airport company representatives.
Marek Rymkiewicz, Commercial and Marketing Director of the Polish airport, told The Moodie Davitt Report that the airport is adapting the terminal’s mezzanine level, which was previously not accessible to passengers.
“The capacities of the duty free zone will be expanded with respect to both retail and dining outlets. The terminal’s area that comprises duty free stores will have its surface increased, and this additional area will total about 460sq m,” Rymkiewicz said. “The section that comprises dining outlets will be moved to the terminal’s mezzanine which we previously used as an office space.”

Following the completion of the construction work, the area allocated to dining outlets will be increased by about 320sq m.
“We plan that both the expanded retail and dining sections will launch their operations in June 2022,” Rymkiewicz said.
Rymkiewicz said that “a competitive procedure and negotiations with tenants were held in 2021,” related to the expansion. He added: “Currently, we are in the process of finalising the required formalities with the tenants of those commercial spaces.”
Lagardère Travel Retail’s Polish subsidiary operates duty free outlets at the airport, and, in a statement provided to The Moodie Davitt Report, it said that the expansion will allow the company to boost its activities.
Lagardère Travel Retail Poland “plans to expand its Aelia Duty Free stores by 170sq m which, in reality, will double its commercial space by a factor of two, to 390sq m. The additional surface will host a broadened duty free product range, [including] perfumes, cosmetics, alcohol, tobacco products and gifts.”
The statement added: “We will also modify the interior design of the store, and the space that we have used to date will undergo a substantial modernisation. In addition to new products, passengers will also find in this store a number of digital features, including new self-service checkout machines.”
Lagardère Travel Retail Poland is also planning to upgrade its Relay store with space to be increased by 25sq m to 70sq m. The store’s format will be upgraded to its Relay ‘New Generation’ concept, which will allow it to “better present particular product categories, and introduce more visible in-store promotional sections,” according to the company.
The Polish airport handled around 1.46 million passengers last year which represented some 46.9% of its 2019 figure.
Opened in 2012 and designed to complement Warsaw Chopin Airport as a hub for low-cost airlines such as Wizz Air and Ryanair, Warsaw Modlin is located about 36km north-west of the centre of the Polish capital.
