Westfield seeks proposals for 18 retail and F&B concessions at LAX T6

USA. Westfield is seeking partners for 18 retail and food & beverage concessions as part of the Terminal 6 redevelopment project at Los Angeles International Airport. Westfield is Terminal Concessions Manager at terminals 1, 2, 3 and 6 as well as the Tom Bradley International Terminal.

Of the 18 units, five will be dedicated to speciality retail (featuring categories such as beauty, technology, accessories, gifts and lifestyle), four to travel essentials, two each will be for coffee, quick service and full service restaurants, plus one grab & go, one speciality bar with coffee and one spa. These are split into 11 separate packages.

Slated to begin construction this Autumn, the redeveloped Terminal 6 will house “a unique dining and retail collection of 18 celebrated local and global brands that capture L.A.’s distinct style while catering to travellers of all kinds,” said Westfield. The redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2016.

“Tom Bradley raised the bar on the traveller experience for airports around the world, and Westfield is continuing that approach of creating tailored, unique environments that work for each terminal’s travellers and for its carriers across the entire LAX project,” said Westfield Executive Vice President Dominic Lowe. “We are committed to helping Los Angeles World Airports fulfill its vision of bringing LA into LAX and creating a world-class Pacific gateway to the world of which the entire city can be proud.”

Westfield said its design vision for the redevelopment of Terminal 6 concessions was “inspired by Los Angeles’ Sunset Boulevard”.

Coined ‘The Boulevard,’ Westfield’s design vision seeks to unify the three disjointed buildings that comprise the current Terminal 6 into one integrated terminal.

The company said that it would aim to replicate the “experience of travelling from downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Coast Highway” through the use of “bold architectural lighting, exciting digital technologies and a cohesive use of materials”. It added: “The meandering curves in Bel Air and Brentwood inspired the retail and dining districts, while a calm glowing bar becomes the ultimate destination to relax or recharge before a flight”.

New amenities will include new luxury restrooms, terrazzo flooring and opening up the interface between the original terminal and its connector – built more than a decade later – to create more space and new sightlines to shopping, dining and gates. Constructed in 1961 and expanded in 1979, LAX’s Terminal 6 is home to 14 gates and five carriers serving both domestic and international travelers. In 2013, Terminal 6 served more than 8.1 million travellers.

In 2013, T6 had gross sales in F&B and speciality retail and travel essentials of US$28.7 million with sales per enplanement of US$6.71. Most of this, over US$20 million, came from F&B.

Proposals for the 18 new concessions are due by 25 August.

As reported, the redevelopment of Terminal 2 is amid construction with 21 new dining and retail destinations planned. The redevelopment is expected to be complete in 2015. New dining, retail and amenities will be phased in over the course of the project.
