WHSmith underlines Australian ambition with new airport stores

AUSTRALIA. Leading news & books retailer WHSmith has underlined its ambitions to grow in Australia with the recent opening of new stores at Sydney and Melbourne airports, as well as in downtown Melbourne. WHSmith now operates five stores in Australia, with more to come, it said.

The WHSmith specialist bookshop in Melbourne Airport, said to be “the first of its kind for an international terminal in Australia”, offers a comprehensive range of English literature, self-help, business and Chinese language books tax free to international customers. This is complemented with a range of book-related gifts, games and toys and premium stationery.

The company said: “The news and travel convenience stores in both Melbourne and Sydney Airports form part of WHSmith’s new generation of premium stores for Australia; with tailor built stores designed to deal with the demands of two of the busiest airport terminals in the region. Both the product mix and the stores’ clear and spacious layouts support the constantly evolving passenger requirements.”

Within the WHSmith in Melbourne Airport, customers will also find a dedicated stationery store within the store, with brands such as Laura Ashley, Moleskin and Parker, as well as the own brand WHSmith ranges.

WHSmith has also recently opened the first of three stores at Melbourne’s Southern Cross railway station. This store will serve both the intercity and suburban commuters at Melbourne’s major transport interchange.

WHSmith Travel Chief Operating Officer Simon Smith said: “We’re delighted to be opening further stores in Australia, following such a successful start earlier in the year with our store openings in Melbourne and Sydney Airports. The WHSmith brand and offer continue to be well received by customers and our like-for-like sales are consistently ahead of the previous incumbents.”
