DENMARK. WHSmith and SSP today officially opened a new 440sq m main news store in Pier B at Copenhagen Airport.

The partnership, with WHSmith as operator and SSP as local manager, took over five news outlets at the airport. They will open successively until the beginning of 2009.

The newly opened store in Pier B increases the range of book titles offered at the airport to about 1,200 Danish titles and 2,500 English titles. A wide range of Danish, Scandinavian and international magazines, newspapers – 45 foreign newspapers and 150 UK magazines – is also available.

“WHSmith is delighted to open our first travel outlet in Copenhagen in partnership with SSP. Both teams believe that the combination of our international expertise and SSP’s local knowledge will deliver an innovative and exciting new proposition for all our customers,” said WHSmith Travel Chief Operating Officer Simon Smith.

The news outlets at Copenhagen Airport each have some 4,000 visitors per day, making them the most popular stores at the airport. It was therefore vitally important to the airport’s commercial team to find the best operator for the news concessions, said Copenhagen Airport Commercial Director Henrik Busch.

“WHSmith is an international, professional operator with many years of experience, including operating news outlets at airports and railway stations,” said Busch. “The combination of WHSmith’s international concept and SSP as the local manager gives us a player with very good skills at operating news outlets. This means that travellers will have a wider range of products to choose from and more efficient operations.

“The news outlets enjoy the greatest numbers of visitors of all the stores at Copenhagen Airport, and I am sure we have found an operator whose strong, international brand will benefit passengers,” he added.
