World Gourmet mounts major travel retail push

US. New Jersey-based healthier eating snack foods company World Gourmet is mounting a major push into the travel retail channel with its Sensible Portions brand.

As reported, the company has appointed Aero-Cos International as its worldwide travel retail distributor and has already made strong gains in the military channel. Aero-Cos previewed the Sensible Portions range at the recent IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas in Orlando, Florida.

World Gourmet Marketing has developed and marketed gourmet snacks since 2000. Sensible Portions products include all-natural and lower-calorie snacks. In 2009, the specialty line experienced double-digit growth and is becoming one of the fastest-growing companies in the snack food industry, according to World Gourmet Marketing.

Sensible Portions aims to set itself apart from other products by focusing on “˜better for you’ options, but not forgetting the importance of taste. Senior Vice President of Sales Shawn Sweeney told The Moodie Report: “We bridge the gap between healthier eating and great taste.

“In the past, healthier, better for you snacks just didn’t stand up from a taste perspective. I’m happy to say that our products have put an end to all of that.”

The Veggie Straws and Chips are all natural, with no transfats, preservatives and the entire line is also Kosher. “Our Veggie Straws and Chips offer a significant amount of unique great tasting product with -30% less fat than a typical potato chip,” said Sweeney.

“We own our own manufacturing facility so we have total control of our quality. By not using a co packer we can pass on savings to our customers with more aggressive retails,” he noted.

Industry consultant Dan Daly, who works closely with Aero-Cos International President and CEO Nathan Barbanel, said: “What is unusual is the degree with which World Gourmet Marketing will work with the retailers. It’s aggressive retail support; it’s not just about pushing the product in.”

Barbanel said the Sensible Portions brand had been experiencing “phenomenal success” in the military market, building on its strong domestic market presence in the US.

“It tastes good and it’s better for you,” he said. “We want to build the brand internationally and globally.”

Added Daly: “There’s a market out there globally which is much greater than in the US because of increased health awareness in other parts of the world.”

Sweeney said that the company was initially very successful in warehouse club channels before he was charged with crossing the brand over into more traditional retail channels. Now he is confident that, in partnership with Aero-Cos International, the brand will excel in travel retail as well.

“As we travel, it becomes even harder to make healthier eating choices. The Sensible Portions brand of products offers a better for you option while on the go without sacrificing taste or quality,” Sweeney said.
