FRANCE. Whyte and Mackay wants more of the travel retail market share. To do so, the company has introduced a new range of malt whisky products at TFWA Cannes 2004 exclusive to travel retail, with “no price comparison domestically”.

With sales of parent brands Isle of Jura and The Dalmore rising +168% and +73% respectively between 2001 and 2003 (Source: IWSR 2004; Survey of top 10 travel retail Single Malts), the company has proven that it can challenge the more established single malt brands.

The new products and promotional packs showcased at the show are designed to support the core malt range across parent brands, namely The Dalmore and Isle of Jura. Whyte and Mackay says they are designed specifically for gifting, for distinguishing the various categories and types and also to encourage trial and repeat purchase. At the show, buyers get to see:

The Miniature Collection Packs which comprise:

The Dalmore Special Cask Selection: Two malts matured in a special selection of sweet Oloroso sherry casks. Price: £23.99/US$37.00.

The Dalmore Miniature Collection Pack: Four malts from the award-winning distillery in a pack. Price: £12.99 / US$20.00.

Isle of Jura Miniature Collection Pack: Four different styles of the Isle of Jura in an attractive pack. Price: £12.99 / US$20.00.

Glayva Cocktail Pack: Four Glayva miniatures complete with four fantastic cocktail recipes using the versatile award-winning liqueur. Price: £8.99 / US$14.00.

Apart from the miniature packs, travel retail buyers also get to view for the first time:

The key regions are graphically illustrated on the packaging. It includes travel retail-exclusive Isle of Jura Legacy and The Dalmore Black Isle. Price: £24.50 / US$38.25

Isle of Jura Superstition: This brand builds on the growth trends heavier, fuller bodied malt whisky styles, playing a supportive role to the core 10yo. It aims to capture a wider audience. The brand combines two Jura styles, namely a bold and strong, with a heavily peated style and also a combination of a combination of premium ages from Jura.

The Dalmore 50 Years Old Miniature (10 cl): A hand-blown and engraved 10cl pyramid decanter of extremely rare 50-year-old single highland malt. This miniature supports what the company claims to be the world’s most expensive single malt, The Dalmore 62yo, a bottle of which sold for £25,877.50 at auction in December 2002. There are only 300 in production. Price: £300/€435/ US$540.

Fergus Reid, Whyte and Mackay spokesperson commented: “The 10cl 50yo decanter offers excellent value for money and gives true malt whisky collectors, connoisseurs and enthusiasts a rare and relatively affordable opportunity to own and sample something very unique. The flavour and character has been allowed to develop for 50 long years at The Dalmore distillery and is consequently like nothing tasted before.

“The spirit is contained within individually hand blown crystal decanters which are stylish, contemporary and collectable. The outer box is truly magnificent and does justice to one of the world’s rarest spirits.”
