DFS Dubrovnik’s sales power ahead amid strong tourism and passenger growth – 16/11/05

CROATIA. Duty free sales in the first nine months of 2005 at DFS Airport Dubrovnik rose +29.9% year-on-year, just outpacing strong international passenger growth of +28.1%.

Of the 928,728 total passengers for the period, some 374,330 were international – and therefore potential duty free buyers.

Sales reached just over €6.0 million for the period compared with €4.6 million in the first nine months of 2004.

Average spend per outgoing international passenger edged ahead by +1.5% to €16.07. Average spend per transaction climbed by an impressive +7.1% to €28.25.

DFS Airport Dubrovnik Manager Trade Department Niksa Milanovic said that store penetration (ratio of international passengers buying in duty free) reached 56.9%.

Top-five categories for the first nine months were:

1. Perfumes and cosmetics: €1.6 million (25.8% share) – +23.1%
2. Tobacco: €1.5 million (25.2% share) – +32.0%
3. Spirits: €1.1 million (18.1% share) – +32.4%
4. Domestic items: €615,128 (10.2% share) – +26.7%
5. Confectionery: €592,458 (9.9% share) – +20.1%

In terms of passenger profile, France was the top destination for international passengers, followed by the UK. Here are the top five destinations and year-on-year passenger growth rates.

1. France: 85,310 (+22.7%)
2. UK: 71,086 (+19.0%)
3. Germany: 47,727 (+12.8%)
4. Ireland: 33,465 (+8.9%)
5. Norway: 18,080 (+4.8%)
