SWEDEN. Swedish travel retailer and wholesaler Inflight Service Europe has named Gustaf Ljunggren as its new CEO, replacing long-serving Chief Executive Peter Candell from 19 August. Candell will move to a new position overseeing strategy and business development.

Candell told The Moodie Report: “I have been with the company for many years now, and I’m looking forward to a new challenge on the strategy and business development side. It’s also positive to have a new generation of people coming in to help drive the business.”

Inflight Service (IFS) said in a statement: “Since taking on the position as CEO in 2001, Peter Candell has led IFS along a development path which has taken the company to a leading position in the travel retail service trade. After eight successful years, Peter Candell has informed the board of his wish to be given more time to focus on the areas closest to his interest and ambition: strategy and business development. Mr. Candell will leave the position as CEO, but thus continue to play an active part in the development of the company. The board of directors has agreed to the proposed changes and has decided to appoint Gustaf Ljunggren as new CEO.”

Ljunggren is currently Managing Director of Unilever Production AB and Vice President Supply Chain Unilever Nordic. IFS added: “He has a successful and solid background in leading positions with various companies within the fast-moving consumer goods and retail sectors – experiences which will be valuable assets in his new position.”

In related news, Purchasing & Logistics Director John Baumgartner will concentrate on the company’s vast logistics business in future. His purchasing role will be taken by Jan-Erik Ericsson, who joins from the ICA Group, one of the Nordic region’s leading retail chains. Ericsson is currently Nordic Purchasing Manager for the Home & Personal Care business area. He joins Inflight Service on 1 September.

Candell said: “After we acquired the Tibro logistics operation from LSG Sky Chefs in 2007, John Baumgartner took on responsibility for that business, as well as purchasing. But now we have over 100 employees and operate 22,000sq m of space in Tibro, and integrating it into our business has been a huge task. So it made sense to split the roles and have somebody with direct responsibility for purchasing. It’s a positive move for the company.”

Inflight Service is owned by Nordic private equity firm CapMan, which entered the business in 2005. The company’s statement said: “CapMan’s resources and commitment have significantly contributed to facilitating further expansion and helped adding several large contracts to IFS’s already extensive customer portfolio. From a position of strength, the focus is now set on continued organic growth over the next years.”
