World first achieved as World Duty Free launches exclusive Yamazaki 1979 whisky from Suntory – 07/11/08

UK. World Duty Free is to exclusively launch the limited-edition Yamazaki 1979 whisky from Morrison Bowmore owner Suntory.

Some 294 bottles of the Japanese single malt whisky will be available across selected World Duty Free stores from this month, retailing at £500 (US$788) each.

Yamazaki 1979 is matured for 29 years in rare Japanese Mizunara oak casks, which are said to add a ripe cinnamon flavour. Copper in colour, hints of pineapple and peach on the nose and a smooth vanilla taste bring together a balanced single malt with a long, sweet finish.

Dating back to World War Two, the Yamazaki distillery began using the Mizunara tree as an alternative when Japan was unable to import American white oaks. The distinctive aroma and flavour has now become a key aspect in producing this slowly matured whisky.

World Duty Free Liquor Buyer Paul Hunnisett said: “The world exclusive launch of Yamazaki 1979 to the liquor category is a great example of World Duty Free thriving to be more innovative in the travel retail market. With only a limited number of bottles available, this is a great opportunity for customers to be part of a unique experience.”
