Around the World of Travel Retail – The Moodie Report’s Month in Pictures: January 2009 – 26/02/09

INTERNATIONAL. Welcome to the January edition of our popular pictorial series, which highlights the key images of the month in travel retail.

Many in the industry were delighted to see Smile Pinki, an acclaimed documentary covering the work of the world’s leading cleft charity, The Smile Train, nominated for an Oscar (which it won at last Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony). This gives priceless exposure to the charity and will help build awareness and support for the cause. Travel retail companies and individuals have helped raise over US$1 million for The Smile Train over the past two years.

A “can do, will do” attitude and customer-focused spirit were central to the annual Inflight Sales Person of the Year (ISPY) awards and training event, organised in London by Travel Retail Training (TRT). Anthony Fung of Dragonair received the major accolade of overall Inflight Sales Person of the Year. Ray Martin, co-owner of TRT who has been battling cancer since September, received a standing ovation for the brave and dignified speech he gave to industry colleagues present at an emotionally-charged event.

Dubai Duty Free’s 25th anniversary Gala Dinner paid tribute to the pioneering management team who started the business on 20 December 1983, as well as every individual who had been part of the spectacular 25-year journey.

Distilleria Bottega announced the passing of its founder Rosina Zambon Bottega and shares the story of the strong-willed and courageous woman who will be remembered for her contributions and her love and pride for the business.

The qualities of endurance, determination, teamwork and passion are brought to the fore as Ken Read, skipper of the Puma Ocean Racing team, reveals details of his “dream partnership” with sport lifestyle company Puma, as well as his experiences in the Volvo Ocean Race, one of the most challenging and extreme events in the sailing world often referred to as the “˜Everest of Sailing’.

We hope you enjoy this month’s selection of images.
