JAPAN. Leading carriers Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways posted a combined +7.1% surge in passengers during the Golden Week holiday, compared to the same period last year. The airlines handled 210,033 passengers between 28 April and 6 May, though this was fewer than the number booked as of 21 April – with many cancellations to the Americas following the swine flu scare.
The news was reported by Travel Journal International Online.* The number of seats available on the two airlines dropped by some -9.2%, and there was a combined load factor of 72.4%, up +11% from a year ago.
Japan Airlines carried 153,263 passengers on its outbound international flights during the period, up +6.5%, while All Nippon Airways transported 56,770 passengers, up by +8.7%.
TJI Online said: “The number of passengers on southeast Asian routes transported by Japan Airlines group carriers rose +9.5% from a year ago to 75,329 and that on Hawaiian routes surged +12.5% to 37,993. However, 26,405 passengers originally booked for the US-bound flights – up some +1.2% from of a year ago — finally resulted in 22,183, off -8.2%.
“All Nippon Airways carried 38,825 passengers on Asian routes, up +12.6%, and 12,477 on the European routes, up +8.6%.”
