INTERNATIONAL. Moodie International S.A. today unveiled The Moodie Report Foundation, a charitable institution dedicated to helping fund cancer research and other cancer-related concerns.

At the same time the company also announced its 10th Anniversary Charity Ball to be held at the Hotel Icon, Hong Kong on 5 October. Funds raised on the evening will be apportioned between The Moodie Report Foundation and travel retail industry charity Hand in Hand for Haiti.

The Foundation, a first for the travel retail media, will be registered in Switzerland and maintain its offices at the headquarters of Moodie International S.A., parent company of The Moodie Report. The Foundation was conceptualised by Martin Moodie, who, with his fellow shareholders in Moodie International S.A., have provided substantial start-up funding from personal resources. A Board of Trustees will be announced shortly.

Jaclyn Wampler, President of Moodie International S.A. said: “We are very excited by this dual announcement. The Hong Kong Charity Ball represents a landmark in our history and also serves as the platform for history in the making with our official launch of The Moodie Report Foundation.

“Giving back to the community and the industry has always been an integral part of The Moodie Report’s ethos so it’s highly appropriate that such an important social programme and the industry’s biggest-ever Corporate Social Responsibility initiative (Hand in Hand for Haiti) will both benefit from our landmark celebrations.”

The Moodie Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie said: “The creation of The Moodie Report Foundation is a very special moment, both for me and for the company I founded back in 2002.

“Just over two years ago I was diagnosed with an aggressive and advanced form of stomach cancer, the treatment of which involved a full gastrectomy (stomach removal) and extensive chemotherapy. Like millions of other sufferers around the world, my life and that of my family was turned upside down from the moment of diagnosis.

“But unlike many others who were treated alongside me – infants, children, teenagers, and adults – my life was spared. Stomach cancer is the second most common cause of cancer mortality worldwide (and one of the five most commonly incurred), leading to almost 750,000 deaths per year.

“Much of the reason I live is due to research. As recently as two decades ago most who were diagnosed with my condition (and with many other variants of it) didn’t make it. Research and modern medicine has changed all that. Survival rates are climbing all the time. But so is the disease’s occurrence rate. Some knowledgeable observers openly describe the disease as a modern-day epidemic. Out of that thought, The Moodie Report Foundation was born.

“At our 10th Anniversary Charity Ball, we are also thrilled to support Hand in Hand for Haiti, which, uniquely in our industry, has not only funded and built a school – Lycée Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in Saint Marc – but actually operates it. As such it has ongoing financial needs for many years into the future. I have been involved with Hand in Hand for Haiti since its early days as a Board Member and am proud to see how it has flourished and now stands as an enduring and transparent testament to the Corporate Social Responsibility credentials of our industry.”

Jaclyn Wampler concluded: “We look forward to seeing all The Moodie Report’s industry friends and supporters on 5 October. In coming weeks we’ll be releasing full details about the Charity Ball and the Foundation.”

Jaclyn Wampler and Martin Moodie will be attending the TFWA Asia Pacific show in Singapore next week and look forward to discussing both initiatives in person.
