Peller Estates sees strong travel retail sales in Canada and Asia

Andrew Peller Ltd International Sales Manager Louise Wilson reports strong sales in Canadian travel retail

Andrew Peller Ltd, the Canadian producer of Peller Estates icewine, has reported strong sales in Canadian duty free shops during 2012.

“Our wines are doing really well in duty free across the whole of Canada. Canadian travel retail sales are up +21%,” International Sales Manager Louise Wilson told The Moodie Report during the TFWA World Exhibition in October 2012.

The company, which also makes icewine for ice hockey champion Wayne Gretzky, has gained a listing for Wayne Gretzky Estates’ icewine in Toronto and Calgary airports. From spring 2013, the wines will be carried in Vancouver Airport and in other parts of Canada.

At Vancouver Airport, Peller Estates icewines have been performing well in the rebranded World Duty Free Group walkthrough store, said Wilson.

Outside Canada, UK and US domestic market sales are performing well, while Asia is strong.

“Seoul Incheon Airport has been seeing a lot of growth from Chinese and Korean passengers. We’re still seeing incremental revenue from the Chinese,” said Wilson.

Overall in travel retail, the best-selling product is the collection of 3 x 200ml bottles, followed by the 6 x 200ml Vidal icewine collection. “Both packs offer fantastic consumer value, exactly what the shopper is looking for in travel retail,” she said.

Wilson reported that this year’s harvest had been very good and the company expected “one of the greatest years” ever, although the volume of grapes is slightly lower due to the summer’s warm weather.

Good year for awards

In other news, Peller Oak Aged Vidal icewine 2011 and Peller Riesling icewine 2008 have each won a gold medal at the prestigious Icewine Du Monde competition.

Earlier this year, Peller Riesling Icewine 2007 collected a gold medal at the Japan Wine Challenge. In addition, Peller Oak Aged Vidal Icewine 2010 received a gold medal at the Japan Wine Challenge and a 90 point rating from Wine Spectator.

Separately, British chef Jamie Oliver’s well-respected London restaurant Fifteen recently selected Peller Estates wines to be listed on the menu.

Established ten years ago, Fifteen gives work to unemployed young people. All proceeds from the restaurant are donated to The Jamie Oliver Better Food Foundation, which is dedicated to inspiring people to reconnect with food and keep cooking skills alive.
