GERMANY. Berlin’s two biggest airports dealt with a record number of passengers in 2012, with over 25 million passing through Tegel Airport and Schönefeld Airport.

A total of 25,261,192 passengers passed through the airports, up +5.1% on 2011. This was despite the fact that flight movements remained virtually the same, with 242,872 take-offs and landings.

According to the preliminary figures, released by Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg, Tegel Airport handled 18,163,918 passengers, up +7.4%, while Schönefeld recorded 7,097,274 passengers, down -0.2%.

In December 2012, the combined airports recorded 1,783,652 passengers, down -0.5% year-on-year, while the number of take-offs and landings hit 16,917 flight movements, down -5.8%.

A total of 496,893 passengers were recorded at Schönefeld Airport last month, -7.1% down on December 2011. Tegel recorded 1,286,759 passengers during the month, up 2.3%.

At 32,140 tonnes, the combined air freight of both airports rose by +2.9% in 2012, with 2,333 tonnes passing through the airport in December, down -6.5%.

Both airports are set to be closed once the new Berlin-Brandenburg Airport begins welcoming passengers. Its opening has been repeatedly delayed because of safety fears, as reported.
