Dufry opens 7,000sq ft of duty free space at Seattle-Tacoma Airport

USA. Dufry has officially opened its new duty free stores at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, just over a year after winning the seven-year concession in a competitive tender.

Covering almost 7,000sq ft and located in the South Satellite, North Satellite, Concourse A and Central Terminal, the stores cater to both domestic as well as international travellers.

Dufry-Seattle JV, which is operating the new Sea-Tac business, consists of Dufry North America LLC and a Seattle-based small business partner, Randi Sibonga of MCSB, Inc.

A grand opening ceremony was held yesterday, following US$4 million in investment by Dufry. Existing duty free stores were demolished or remodelled to make way for the new stores.

The majority of merchandise – including cosmetics, fragrances, handbags and watches – is available for purchase at reduced prices by all travellers. Tobacco and alcohol purchases are restricted to international departures.

According to the Port of Seattle, the 3,600sq ft store in the South Satellite particularly appeals with its selection to the tastes of Asian, European and Middle Eastern departing passengers.

“The new duty free stores are key to providing the quality, variety and affordability travellers have come to expect in a world-class airport. With new jobs and increased revenue, it’s a win-win for travellers, the airport and the community,” said Sea-Tac Airport Managing Director Mark Reis.

“We believe that these new stores will increase sales by at least +60% to US$175 million and at least US$50 million in revenue to the port over the next seven years. The shops will support approximately 85 direct jobs plus the employment for numerous local and Washington suppliers of merchandise.”

Among the local Washington brands featured in the store are Almond Roca, Fran’s Chocolates, Seattle Chocolates, Chukar Cherries, Aplets & Cotlets, Seabear Wild Salmon, Oberto Meat Snacks, Chateau Ste Michelle wines and Eddie Bauer apparel.
