USA. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK Airport) Terminal 4 posted an +18% surge in passengers year-on-year in 2014, to 17.1 million. It follows Delta Air Lines’ move to the terminal, a major recent expansion and a series of new retail, airline, security and restaurant offerings.
The US$1.4 billion expansion has added 11 gates to the terminal’s B-Concourse and will be completed this month. It sees the terminal welcome new airline partner China Southern with a new direct route to Guangzhou.
Travellers can use new touch-screen interactive kiosks to navigate the terminal and find directions to retail units including new offers from Michael Kors, Victoria’s Secret, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bluwire, Hugo Boss, Swarovski, Tumi and Longchamp.
A series of restaurant additions were unveiled during 2014 including a second Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack, a McDonalds with a dining room and McCafe, an expanded The Palm Bar & Grille with a new breakfast menu and regional food market Camden Food.
Partnering with SSP America, Terminal 4 also opened The Central Diner, the airport’s first authentic New York diner and only pre-security, sit-down dining option.

JFK International Air Terminal LLC (JFKIAT), the company that manages the terminal, welcomed the 17 millionth passenger Jared Gerber late last year with a series of gifts from JFKIAT, Delta Airlines and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Gerber was travelling to Madrid with wife Sara Yerry to celebrate their first wedding anniversary when they were presented with access to the Priority Screening Checkpoint Lane, a US$250 gift card, an upgrade to Delta Air Lines business class, access to the Delta Sky Club, a gift basket and tickets to a Broadway show, including dinner as well as an airport hat and a coffee table book.
JFKIAT President and CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said: “As the premier international terminal at New York’s JFK Airport, reaching the 17 million passenger milestone is a matter of tremendous pride for all of us associated with this remarkable transportation centre. Today’s air passengers appreciate the top-of-the-line retail shops, restaurants, and overall comfort they find here at JFK’s Terminal 4.”
To minimise delays to the growing number of travellers, JFKIAT has introduced a canine screening initiative in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration and invested US$4 million to provide additional Automated Passport Control kiosks.
De Graff remarked: “Terminal 4 had an extraordinary year thanks to our exceptional staff, our airline partners, concession operators and air travellers from all over the globe. We are looking forward to an even more successful 2015 for one of the country’s most active air terminals.”
During 2014, three new sculptures were unveiled as part of an exclusive commission executed by artist Dimitar Lukanov. The installation extends the terminal’s vast collection of private art on display throughout the building.
Note: The Moodie Report’s next Print Edition will include a major series of features on JFK Airport’s Terminal 4 and its key concession partners.
