CHINA. Hainan’s busiest air travel hub, Haikou Meilan International Airport, posted a significant -28.22% year-on-year decline in non-aeronautical revenues in 2022. However, the number reported in the airport’s just-published 2022 financial results is ahead of the corresponding traffic decline of -36.2% (11.2 million in 2022 vs. 17.5 million in 2021).

Revenue from non-aeronautical business reached RMB780.32 million (2021: RMB1,087.13 million), accounting for 68.36% of total income.
Total 2022 revenue reported by Haikou Meilan International Airport Company was RMB1,141.46 million (2021: RMB1,605.71 million), a year-on-year decline of almost 29%.
The airport company cited the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as the cause of declining non-aeronautical revenues, as offline sales of duty free stores at Meilan Airport fell significantly. This led to a notable year-on-year decrease in airport franchise income (-32.04% on sales of RMB453,939,102).
