Love is in the air as GDF Plaza partners with Chagee teahouse for China’s Qixi Festival

CHINA. Global Premium Duty Free (GDF) Plaza has stepped up its promotional programme of cross-industry collaborations during Hainan’s summer travel season.

The Haikou-based downtown duty-free retailer joined hands with renowned teahouse franchise Chagee and launched celebratory promotions for Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine’s Day) on 10 August. A Qixi-themed float at Mova mall in Haikou marked the first collaboration between the two.

The float was showcased in GDF Plaza along with a Poetry and Wine garden party display, helping to create what GDF Plaza called a nostalgic and traditional atmosphere. The retailer launched Qixi Festival activities in-store, including a scratch-and-win event, to attract more tourists during the holidays.

The continuous exploration of collaborative concepts is integral to the retailer’s pledge to inject vitality into the holidaymaking market. GDF Plaza will soon launch an additional campaign with Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park

As reported, the retailer partnered with Hainan Airlines and China Southern airlines for a ‘use your air ticket as cash’ campaign which kicked off in July. The promotion – which entails discount vouchers and in-store courtesies – will run till the end of 2024. According to GDF Plaza, the initiative has been well-received, effectively linking the aviation and duty-free sectors.

A GDF Plaza representative said: “Offshore duty-free shopping has become a beautiful name card for the integration of culture and tourism in Hainan and is also a key area for expanding consumption during the summer.

“We hope to continuously launch more products, scenarios and business models by partnering with a diverse range of industries to cater to various types of consumers.

“Next, we will partner with Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park to launch the Panda Brothers themed check-in point and Cat Fans’ explorative store activities. We will continue working with IP themes favoured by younger generations, explore market consumption hotspots, foster new growth points and build GDF Plaza into a luxurious ‘treasure’ duty-free hub.” 🏝️
