Aberfeldy 26 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Edition debuts globally with Avolta at Heathrow

UK. Bacardi Global Travel Retail has partnered with Avolta-owned World Duty Free to launch the limited-edition Aberfeldy 26 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Edition on an initial exclusive at London Heathrow Airport.

The expression will later be introduced at certain other Avolta locations.

The 56.8% ABV single malt whisky is limited to just 618 bottles (RRP US$700 Pound Sterling equivalent). It is part of the growing Exceptional Cask Series, a family comprising single-cask bottlings, double-cask expressions and small-batch single malts.

Aberfeldy 26 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Edition was filled into a refill cask on 26 June before being transferred into an Oloroso sherry cask in 2013 for over a decade.

The expression’s profile bears the imprint of this long finishing process without masking Aberfeldy’s signature smooth, honeyed character (see sidebar below main story).

Dark cherries and stewed plums come to the fore on the palate, accompanied by rich, dried figs and dates. Creamy notes of vanilla, toasted oak, baking spices and a hint of espresso coffee also combine to create a complex, multi-layered whisky.

“We’re incredibly excited to unveil this rare malt at Europe’s busiest airport,” said Bacardi Global Travel Retail Marketing Director Darragh Ryan.

“Aberfeldy 26 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish is a harmonious blend of time, tradition and expertise, and the Avolta stores at London Heathrow Airport are the perfect stage for such a special whisky. We can’t wait for collectors and whisky enthusiasts to experience the magic within this bottle.” ✈

A taste of honey

Aberfeldy whiskies undergo an extended fermentation and are notable for their fruit-forward style with a signature honeyed character. Every expression carries an age statement, a hallmark of the Highland single malt whisky that has contributed to its growing global popularity.

Oloroso sherry casks are prized in the Scotch whisky industry for their ability to enhance the flavour of maturing whisky during ageing. A single sherry butt can contain ten litres of sherry which both seeps into the whisky during maturation and changes the flavour compounds in the oak cask.
