UAE. Abu Dhabi Duty Free’s (ADDF) major seasonal promotional campaign, Summer Fiesta, has got off to a successful start.
One month into the event, total duty free turnover has increased by +8.5% compared with the month of June 2003. The seven shops where the 5% and 10% discount vouchers can be spent are showing “significant increases”, according to the retailer.
By category, toys are up +26%; destination souvenirs +57%; luggage +42.9%; gifts +13.2%; sports items +106%; books/magazines +49%; and watches +8%.
ADDF Managing Director Mohamed Mounib commented: “The initial results of the Summer Fiesta are very promising, indicating that we will meet our target of a +15% increase in sales by the end of [the event].”
During the first six months of 2004, Abu Dhabi International Airport has experienced a notable increase in passenger numbers due to the launch of Etihad Airways, the UAE’s new national carrier.
The airline’s passenger profile has stimulated high-end sales at the location; correspondingly, turnover for the first half is up almost +30% compared with the same period in 2003.
