UK. Spanish airport authority Aena Aeropuertos and investment fund AXA have acquired London Luton Airport from TBI.
The £394.2 million deal makes Luton the sixth biggest airport in Aena’s network, with 9.6 million passengers last year placing it above Alicante and just behind Gran Canaria Airport. Luton is the fifth busiest passenger airport in the UK.
Aena holds 51% of the airport equity through the new consortium with AXA, compared to the 10% it held previously through its participation with Abertis in TBI.
The transaction is subject to approval by the European Commission on Competition, the Municipal Council of Luton and Council of Ministers of the Government of Spain.
In a statement Aena said: “This acquisition is part of the strategy to increase Aena’s international presence with controlling stakes in strategic airports and divestments in minority foreign holdings.”
