SPAIN. Spanish airports company Aena posted a +11% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic across its network in 2016, to 230.2 million.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport handled 50.4 million passengers, up +7.7%. Barcelona El Prat posted +11.2% growth to 44.1 million.
Aena attributed the good performance to strong tourism development.

Some 161.7 million passengers took international flights, representing a +12% increase across Aena’s network. Some 67.5 million passengers flew domestically, up +8.8% compared to 2015.
Other airports that recorded strong growth were: Palma de Mallorca (+10.6%), Malaga Costa Del Sol (+15.7%), Alicante-Elche (+16.7%) and Gran Canaria (+13.8%).
In December Aena’s 48 airports handled just over 15 million passengers, a +12.6% year-on-year increase.
