SPAIN. Two packages of tenders – one for 11 retail units and another for ten spaces – have been made available at Barcelona-El Prat Airport Terminal 1.

According to airport operator AENA the move “creates a unique display window for brands, expanding the more than 13,000sq m already there and the 38 retail brands currently offered”.
The first batch of individual tenders consists of 11 units ranging in size from 47sq m to 149sq m, each for a period of five years. Eight of them are in prominent airside locations, close to the core Dufry-run duty free store, and three on the landside. The biggest of the airside units is a store for fashion & accessories. In total they cover 1,195sq m.
The second batch consists of ten new travel retail units covering 25sq m up to 107sq m of which eight are pop-ups in the departures area, the largest being 50sq m. In total they cover 411sq m.
The deadline for bids for the first batch of shops is 17 February with the selection process taking place in March and contracts expected to be in place by mid-April. Store operations are planned to start in mid-May. Bids for the second batch are scheduled to close in early June with winners announced in early August and shops opening by the beginning of October.
Terminal 1 handles 66% of the airport’s 52.7 million passengers (provisional data 2019). The top five nationalities at the terminal are Spanish (5.9 million), Italian (1.5 million), French (1.5 million), German (1.2 million) and British (0.9 million).
Vueling is, by far, the biggest carrier with 10.2 million passengers, followed by Iberia (876,511) and then Lufthansa, Air Europa and British Airways.
